Hi all! It's Missions Monday!! I get so excited! Truly!
While on Beautiful Mess-Psalm 40's blog, I was touched so deeply by her post on Water For Christmas! It's definitely a cause to support! We have all kinds of gadgets, movies, CDs, and gift cards that are all just distractions waiting to be bought and given this Christmas holiday. But there are over a billion of people all over the world who don't have access to clean water! Ridiculous! We're dying and killing ourselves over debt but our brothers & sisters are dying because of lack of clean water. Water has so many more uses besides just drinking! Charity:water says that the average American uses 150 gallons of water a day while the average person in a developing country struggles to find 5 gallons!
This is what charity:water says to the question "Why water?"
Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Many people in the developing world, usually women and children, walk more than three hours every day to fetch water that is likely to make them sick. Those hours are crucial, preventing many from working or attending school. Additionally, collecting water puts them at greater risk of sexual harassment and assault. Children are especially vulnerable to the consequences of unsafe water. Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old. OUR PLANET IS 70% WATER. 97.5% OF THAT IS SALTWATER. THIS MEANS ONLY 2.5% IS AVAILABLE FOR THE 6 BILLION PEOPLE ON THE PLANET TODAY. We get our water from the 30% of freshwater that exists in underground lakes and aquifers - mainly by digging wells. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean water just below the ground, but no way to get to it.
Let's band together you guys and support this wonderful effort! I know that during this season we are bombarded with pleas to give, even giving to those less fortunate in America. But we can't dismiss this one!
Visit their site NOW! Give for you, your moms, dads, and grandparents who always say they don't need anything. Give on behalf of the person who has everything - including water (that option on gift-finding sites always make me laugh...if they have everything then why is there a gift-finding category for them! Wasteful!)!
